Coram Boy
Autumn Term 2011

This was ensemble playing at its very best, with a cast involving pupils from Year 8 to the Upper Sixth who played with passion, conviction and an unerring sense of theatre. The business of the play is horribly dark, the trafficking of children in 1742, contrasted with the beauty of  Handel’s music and the goodness of men like Thomas Coram who    created the Foundling Hospital.

Romeo & Juliet
Spring Term 2011

The talented thespians of Years 9 and 10 in Ryde School performed William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with a modern twist.

Staging one of the Bard’s best known plays with a cast of Year 9 and 10s is a challenging task, but   under the impressive direction of Mr Bridgeman the young cast more than rose to the occasion. The abridged version of Romeo and Juliet captured the intense emotional torment of the young lovers, and the modern setting of the production allowed a fresh approach to the story that could not fail to engage the audience. From the opening battle scene performed in street dance, to the moving closing scene, the audience was delighted and enthralled with the imaginative adaption and the original performances by the cast.

 Our Country's Good
In 1787, a ship leaves Portsmouth Harbour bound for Australia. Its cargo? Human beings. Governor Arthur Phillip hopes to create a new order in the colony where individuals can be reformed rather than continue with a life of vice and crime. A young lieutenant is directing rehearsals of the first play ever to be staged in that country. With only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts and one leading lady who is to be hanged, the governor’s vision will be sorely tried.
 With a Pinch of Salt
October 2010
More like a dose of salts! The pace was fast, the jokes incessant and the cast enormous. Anything that has Goths, Visigoths and Hitler the Musical has a lot going for it and when you add Pythagoras, Henry the Eighth, an Aerial Ballet and the moonlanding you know the author isn’t going to hang around. Happily the author was well served by the director and Tim Bull had clearly enjoyed encouraging his young cast to revel in the opportunities offered by this eclectic script. They threw themselves at it and the resulting mayhem was glorious

The Caucasian Chalk Circle
With two nights at school and a tour to the Quay Arts Centre, CCC was a fantastic opportunity for students to understand Brecht in action. With its mix of a real character with caricatures costumed in newspaper crowns, bling jewellery, ruffs, hats in various shapes and sizes, this was political theatre at its very best. The ensemble approach worked really well, giving students the chance to play many different roles and to create a very real mix of humour and tension.

Oh What A Lovely War
A cast of thirty, supported by a live band of seven and a crew of three, sallied forth into the trenches of World War One in 'Oh What a Lovely War'. They performed for two nights at school and on tour at the Quay Arts Centre.

Multi-role playing, song and dance, humour, biting satire, harrowing facts and statistics juxtaposed with the most poignant of scenes, made this a truly memorable experience.
