Prefects
Prefects
From within the Upper Sixth the School operates a system of “volunteer Prefects and elected Senior Prefects. Both Prefects and Senior Prefects must apply in writing and undergo a trial period, and Senior Prefects are subsequently elected by staff, members of the Upper Sixth and the current Heads and Deputy Heads of School. It is usual for the Headmaster, following extensive consultation, to appoint two Deputy Head Girls, two Deputy Head Boys, one Head Girl and one Head Boy, collectively known as Heads of School. The Head Girl and Head Boy receive external training and preparation for their roles in the summer holiday prior to their term of office. All prefects are identifiable by the appropriate lapel badge. Badges may be removed for persistent under performance or behaviour unbecoming for a prefect.
All prefects perform duties as organised by the Heads of School. Duties include break and lunchtime supervision and lunchtime academic and community detentions. Prefects also assist on formal school occasions and open events. At all times prefects are expected to be role models for all other pupils and ambassadors for the School. A number of prefects have additional responsibilities such as assisting Heads of House, assisting tutors in Years 7 and 8, acting as Peer Listeners, running the School Council and Catering Committee. Prefects have the authority to issue Credit and Order marks to pupils in Years 7-11 for good and bad conduct respectively. These are collated and communicated to Heads of Year on a weekly basis so that they may issue appropriate rewards and sanctions.
The Heads of School meet with the Deputy Headmaster and Head of Sixth Form weekly before school. All prefects meet weekly during morning break with senior staff including the Headmaster.
