Silver Expeditions

At the end of June, 23 Year 11 students embarked on our longest and most diverse Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifier to date.  The Letterboxers, Extra Mints, 3 Meat 3 Veg and Dream Team navigated their way from Princetown to Holne, then to Postbridge and finally south to Burrator Reservoir over three days and two nights.  Whilst achieving this, they investigated projects of letterboxes, Dartmoor wildlife, Myths and Legends and expedition psychology respectively.  They also fitted in some research at the National Park’s Visitors Centre in the midst of the Prison, found the local zip wire at the play area, played bar skittles at the Plume of Feathers and played illuminated Frisbee at Holne.  Reaching the end point at Norsworthy Bridge, under strict assessment, was a considerable achievement for all the students.

On Monday 28th June, having just finished their GCSEs, 28 Year 11 students set off to Dartmoor National Park for their assessed expedition. The five teams (Rafiki, Currently No Name, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Toast and Bee) followed different routes in the Postbridge area, over three days and 2 nights. Whilst being assessed on their campcraft, cooking, map skills, stamina and teamwork, they also undertook studies such as psychology on an expedition, the quality of river water, Bronze Age Settlements and the legends of Dartmoor. As the teams successfully entered the Fernworthy Reservoir area end point, their assessors, George Weech and David Hood, passed them. Support help was gratefully received from the Prestons and Jeremy Lea
