Combined Cadet Force
The aim of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is to provide a disciplined organisation within the school, so that our pupils may develop further their powers of leadership by means of training, to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance,resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance and a sense of service to the community. We believe that the self-confidence and self-discipline required in Service life are equally important in civil life
 
Membership is voluntary in Year 9 and pupils join because they enjoy, or think they will enjoy, the wide range of activities and opportunities available. Ryde School CCF comprises two Service sections, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The Contingent has a Contingent Commander and four other CCF officers. Service personnel who visit the school regularly also support it.
 
The aims of the CCF are developed by a central core of activities at basic proficiency level common to both Service sections. The activities include basic drill, a basic understanding of the role of the Services, map reading, the safe handling of weapons and shooting and self-reliance training, which in turn includes camp-craft and first-aid.Satisfactory completion of the Basic Proficiency marks the transition from recruit to cadet.
 
Thereafter, at Advanced Proficiency levels, activities are chosen that take account of the school’s situation. The RN section has a fleet of small sailing craft including Lasers, Toppers and Bosun dinghies together with a RIB and Cheverton Champ motor boat that allow RN cadets regular sailing opportunities. There is also a fleet of eight kayaks and we have our own .22 rifle range. Our officers are fully trained and qualified to deliver our varied range of activities. We also offer regular visits to Naval Establishments and RAF air bases for training that recently have included fire-fighting, damage control, air experience flying and gliding.
