Modern Languages
The Modern Languages Department is well-resourced with up-to-date course books and fully equipped classrooms, including TV/DVD players, audio equipment and projectors in all the rooms, with smart boards in three classrooms. We also make full use of the Internet and pupils have access to subscription-only languages sites, which they are also encouraged to use in their own time.
Years 7, 8 and 9
French is compulsory for all pupils until the end of Year 11. In year 9, the top two sets do two periods per week of Spanish, which can be taken as a second foreign language for GCSE. We use the Métro course book which is common to all in Year 7 and is then differentiated from Year 8 onwards. The book is complemented by flashcards, OHPs and IT software. Pupils are placed in sets at Christmas in Year 7. An exchange with Avignon in the South of France is offered in Year 8.
GCSE
French
Most pupils are entered for the Higher Level tiers in most of the skill areas. Pupils are arranged in 5 sets, according to ability. The more able sets are taught with AS/A2 French in mind, providing a solid base by paying attention to grammatical accuracy. Pupils are entered for coursework, instead of the writing paper. We use the Métro coursebook at two differentiated levels. Pupils also have access to a native French speaker for regular conversation practice. All languages follow the AQA specification for the legacy GCSE, and WJEL from September 2009 (Year 10).
Spanish
Spanish is started in Year 9 by the top two sets, only, and can be continued through to A level. This is an increasingly popular subject. The coursebook used is Listos.
The Sixth Form
French and Spanish are taught to A level, currently following the AQA specification. The courses are drawn from a variety of up-to-date resources and use of the Internet is encouraged. The Library also has materials and subscription magazines to encourage self-supported learning. An extensive range of videos and DVDs are available to borrow from the Department. AS and A2 French pupils have one period per week conversation with a native French speaker.
Extra-Curricular
A highly successful French Exchange visit to Avignon is available for pupils in Year 8. They are committed from Year 7, when the correspondence with a class in France begins. Other trips are also planned. There is also a foreign film club and extra listening practice for GCSE students,
