French

French is taught by specialist subject staff throughout the Junior School, the numbers of lessons per week increasing in Years 5 and 6.

Children enjoy a range of popular topics, with an emphasis on listening and conversational skills from the outset. They benefit from a variety of exciting resources, based around “La Jolie Ronde" in Years 3 and 4 and the “Comète course in Years 5 and 6. Our children learn through songs, role-play, games and visual aids, as well as Internet resources.

In Year 6, an annual residential trip to Normandy provides a highlight for many and a chance to practise newly acquired vocabulary in a real-life situation.

Popular visits are made to the Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St Michel and Arromanches as well as to a local business such as a cheese factory, Calvados distillery or the very popular sweet factory!

Children may join the Junior School with very little prior knowledge, but with a carefully planned spiralling curriculum, children leave well prepared for daily French lessons in the next stage of their education; confident to succeed in the practice and expansion of their language skills.
