The school day provides children with many opportunities to take part in speaking and listening activities, allowing them to talk and listen confidently. Our children are encouraged to explore and communicate their ideas in a variety of situations, including assemblies in the morning, during class discusions and when working on group tasks.

Learning to read is paramount and children read to a member of staff on most days and take part in guided reading sessions. Here at Fiveways, we have a comprehensive selection of reading schemes and each classroom has a class library book box. Children become confident to read a range of texts with greater fluency and accuracy. They are encouraged to read independently for their own pleasure and develop an appreciation for fiction and non-fiction. They can use their knowledge of the alphabet to locate books and find information.
From an early age, children are encouraged to write at every opportunity and explore an exciting variety of genres. Children learn to write in a clear,
organised and imaginative way, using interesting words. They are taught to use the correct grammar and punctuation. A scheme for spelling accurately, the “For-get-me-not words, is used and children are taught to write in a clear, legible cursive script.
