Mathematics

For A level we also follow Edexcel. We try to keep our Maths sets in 1 column, so that we can place students in a set that is appropriate for their level and pace of learning. The Further Maths set will also have Maths in another column as well. In Year students will study Core Maths 1 and 2, with a choice, ideally of Mechanics 1, Statistics 1 or Decision1, which makes up the AS level. These exams are taken at the end of Year 12.

The Further Maths set will do all these modules, along with Core Maths 3 and take them exams in them at the end of Year 12.

In Year 13, A level students will then do Core Maths 3 and 4, as well as one more module, which would most likely be Statistics, Mechanics or Decision 2. The Further Maths students will do Core Maths 4, Further Pure 1 and 2, as well as 3 more modules, most likely Statistics, Mechanics and Decision 2. There is the possibility to do Further Pure 3 or Mechanics 3, but it will depend on the student in question and staffing.

Throughout the Senior School, we give opportunities for our best students to enter National Mathematics Challenges. There are three, the Junior (Years 7 – 8), Intermediate (Years 9 – 11) and Senior ( Years 12 and 13). We have experienced considerable success in these in recent years and we are submitting 2 teams this year to a National Maths Team Challenge in Southampton, which is quite exciting.

For all students, there is help available in our regular Maths Clinics, which take place after School every day but Friday and on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes. These are manned by staff, with one being manned by an A level student who is doing his Duke of Edinburgh Service.
